Sino Language Gateway extends its effort in promoting Chinese learning through
immersion to college students and adult of all ages in 2010.
Our adult program offers participants multiple channels to learn Chinese
quickly in a short period of time, experience first-hand about China's rich
culture, geographic and ethnic diversity, as well as its fast-changing
realities. It aims to build friendships and enhance cross-cultural understanding
between people in China and other countries.

intermediate, and advanced level, and followed by a one week authentic

Program Description

On a typical day: Students will have three hours of Chinese class in the
morning, an hour of drills and an hour 1-on-1 conversation session with native
language tutors in the afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is left open for
study and extracurricular activities in Chinese. Classes meet Monday through
Friday, and range in size from 8 to 12 students. In addition, students are
encouraged to take lessons in Chinese arts, such as brush painting, martial
arts, calligraphy and engraving.
On the weekends: There are trips, performances, lectures by local
guest speakers from various strata of Chinese society. Students may also spend
time on weekends with host families to experience the daily lives and customs of
Chinese families. Weekend trips to historic sites, such as the Great Wall and
Hutong will broaden students perspectives on Chinese culture.
An adventure trip to Tibet: Students will spend the 5th week of the
program visiting Tibet. The land of Tibet, often referred to as the roof of the
world, or the "Sunshine City" that bathed in sunshine for more than 3,000 hours
a year, is the largest and highest plateau on earth. Its unique Buddhist
culture, magnificent wildlife, and grand peaks have been sealed from outsiders
for years. Students will have the opportunities to visit the ancient city of
Lhasa, Potala Palace, the holy lake Namtso, over 5,000m high passes Gyantse
and the second largest city Shigatse .
Weekend Excursions: The program includes several group trips to
historic and cultural sites. Destinations include the Great Wall, Forbidden
City, Hutong, 798 Contemporary Art Zone, Antique Markets, and Chinese acrobatic
performances.
Cultural Activities: Chinese arts workshops are available in the
afternoon, including brush painting, martial arts, calligraphy and engraving.
Students are encouraged to attend organized group dinners and other activities
with their language teachers, tutors and local college students to utilize their
Chinese skills in an informal setting. Students attending optional activities
are required to speak only Chinese.
Volunteer Opportunities: Part-time English language teaching and
volunteer opportunities are available to interested students. These positions
vary in time commitment and skills maybe required.

Courses with Tibet tour $4,080

*Includes tuition, course materials, housing, orientation, weekend excursions,
cultural activities, meals on travel days and insurance. It does not include
international airfare, visa fees, meals and personal expenses.

Accommodations
Two housing options to choose from:
- Homestay: Living with a host family allows students to use
Chinese on a regular basis and also gain insight into the local lifestyle.
Host families are chosen from the school faculty and administrators who
apply to host SLG program participants. They usually live either on the
university campus or very close. Students usually have their own room or
share a room with one other student in an air-conditioned house.
- University Residence: University dormitory offers double-room
units with a private bathroom in each unit. Each unit is very well equipped
with air-conditioner, a TV, a telephone and a bathroom with hot shower.
Internet access in the rooms is available.
- Most meals are not included in the program except those on travel days.
- Sufficient sports fields right on-campus including basketball courts,
volleyball courts, football field, badminton courts, tennis courts, and
ping-pang tables.

- The program opens to high school seniors ages 17 and up
- Ready to adjust to the different values, lifestyle and attitudes of a
foreign country
- Willing to learn Chinese language
- In good health and have excellent character references
You are not required to speak Chinese to enter the program. However, to
maximize the camp experience, it is important that you are interested in Chinese
cultures. Students are expected to embrace local Chinese culture while also be
willing to exemplify positive attributes of the society and life of your own
country.
